Purple Sapphire — also called Violet Sapphire or Shyamala in Sanskrit — is a rare and breathtaking variety of corundum (the same mineral family as Blue Sapphire and Ruby) that displays a mesmerising range of purple to violet hues, sometimes with a slight pink or reddish undertone. The colour arises from a combination of chromium (which produces red and pink) and iron-titanium interactions (which produce blue) within the crystal — creating that distinctive purple that exists between the two.

True natural purple sapphires are significantly rarer than blue sapphires and command attention both for their uncommon beauty and their powerful metaphysical properties. At Ratna Kendra, Lucknow, our Purple Sapphires are natural, predominantly unheated, and accompanied by gemological certification.

Astrological Significance

Purple Sapphire occupies a fascinating and somewhat rare position in Vedic gemstone therapy. Its colour bridges blue (Saturn/Shani) and pink-red (Moon and Venus), making it astrologically associated with both Saturn and Moon energies, or in some traditions, with Rahu’s higher spiritual vibration.

This makes Purple Sapphire particularly suited to individuals who need to harmonise their emotional world (Moon) with the discipline of Saturn, or those on a deeper spiritual path where intuition and wisdom need to work in tandem. Some Vedic astrologers also recommend it during Shani Antardasha within a Moon Mahadasha (or vice versa), where it serves as a bridge stone. In Western mystical traditions, it is associated with the crown and third-eye chakras — activating higher perception, spiritual vision, and divine connection.

Key Benefits

  • Intuition & Psychic Sensitivity: Purple Sapphire is perhaps the most spiritually attuned of all sapphire varieties, opening the third eye and heightening intuitive perception, dream clarity, and inner knowing.
  • Emotional Intelligence: By bridging Saturn’s structure with Moon’s sensitivity, it helps the wearer develop mature emotional intelligence — feeling deeply while thinking clearly.
  • Meditation & Spiritual Practice: Widely used by meditators, healers, and spiritual seekers as a focus stone that deepens states of meditation and inner silence.
  • Creative & Intellectual Excellence: Enhances creativity, artistic vision, and scholarly depth — highly beneficial for artists, musicians, writers, researchers, and healers.
  • Mental Clarity & Decision-Making: Clears mental fog, reduces indecision, and brings clear, purposeful thinking even in complex situations.
  • Rarity & Investment: As one of the rarer sapphire varieties, fine Purple Sapphire holds strong gemological and collector value, appreciating over time.

How to Wear Purple Sapphire

  • Set in silver or white gold, which best complements the cool violet energy of this stone.
  • Saturday evening (for Saturn alignment) or Monday (for Moon alignment) — based on primary astrological intent.
  • Energise with ‘Om Sham Shanicharaya Namah’ (Saturn) or ‘Om Som Somaya Namah’ (Moon) 108 times as directed by your astrologer.
